Abandoned Ellis Island Hard Hat Tour
$96. Includes ferry tickets & museum admission
About
The south side of Ellis Island has been closed since 1954. In this 4-hour experience, you will put on a hard hat and walk the abandoned hospital complex that processed and treated millions of immigrants: the laundry building, the contagious disease wards, the autopsy rooms, the staff house, and the former morgue. Your round-trip ferry ticket from Castle Clinton, Manhattan is included. You'll also encounter JR's 'Unframed' exhibition, life-size photographs of immigrants superimposed on the walls of the decaying buildings. Led by a Save Ellis Island docent. Your ticket directly funds the restoration of this extraordinary place. Maximum 15 guests.
Highlights
The south side of Ellis Island is one of the most remarkable abandoned sites in the United States. Twenty-nine historic buildings from the early twentieth century, once the most advanced public health complex in America, have sat closed since 1954. Almost no one has access.
This hard hat tour, run in exclusive partnership with Save Ellis Island, is one of the only ways to get inside. You will walk the same corridors as doctors, nurses, and patients who worked and lived here a century ago. The laundry rooms, the contagious disease wards, the autopsy rooms, the former morgue. Throughout the buildings, you will also encounter artist JR's 'Unframed' exhibition: life-size photographs of immigrants superimposed on the crumbling walls. It is eerie, moving, and unlike anything else in New York.
Your guide is a Save Ellis Island docent with deep knowledge of the hospital's history and ongoing restoration efforts. Maximum 15 guests per tour. Hard hats provided. Your round-trip ferry ticket is included in the price and sent by email the day before your visit.
