About the Class:

During this 2-hour course, we will process pre-harvested devil's club into salve. Participants will learn how to harvest devil's club, tips and tricks for working with the plant's sharp stalk, and help make a salve during the course.

Each participant will take home a 2-oz container of salve, as well as knowledge and recipes for further explorations.

Total workshop time is approximately 2 hours. This course is best suited for adult learners and teenagers.

What will we make?

Participants will help harvest devil's club stalks to make a plant infusion. We will use a pre-prepared infusion to make a salve during the course.

Optional add-on, Plant Identification Walk

Prior to our Devil's Club Salve class, we will be doing a plant identification walk around the Matanuska River Park trails. Book both the walk and salve making when checking out for savings.

Devil's Club Salve Making, Class Only (1PM-3PM): $55 per person $45 per person for Adventure Club Members

Plant Identification, Walk Only (11AM-12:30PM): $20 per person $10 per person for Adventure Club Members

Both the Salve Making and the Plant Identification Walk $65 per person ($10 in savings) $50 per person for Adventure Club Members ($5 in additional savings)

About Ute:

Ute Riesenkönig Olsson received a Master of Forestry from Duke University and a Master of Science in Ecological Studies from Colorado State University. She taught natural history to all ages at the Eagle River Nature Center for two decades before her retirement. Ute has a special interest in ethnobotany -- how humans have traditionally used plants in Alaska.

  • Additional layers (hat, liner gloves, light jacket)
  • Rain gear - If you have it, carrying both rain pants and a rain jacket is recommended
  • Water (1-2 liters recommended)
  • Light snacks
  • Notebook and writing utensil (as desired)

Cancellation

For day trips and community classes, cancellations made: More than one week before trip departure, receive a full refund minus a 5% processing fee. Less than one week before trip departure, receive no refund.
