About GAF Halibut
GAF, or Guided Angler Fish, is a program that allows us to offer halibut fishing on days when halibut retention is normally closed. Puffin Charters uses GAF to help guests whose only chance to fish falls on one of those closed days—so you still get a shot at landing a halibut. Through the Catch Sharing Plan, commercial halibut quota is transferred to qualified charter operators and issued as GAF. This allows each angler to legally retain ONE halibut, even on closed days, under specific regulations in Area 3A. GAF trips run on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the season. Depending on the time of year, we’ll often round out the day by targeting rockfish, silver salmon, or king salmon, making for a full and exciting day on the water.
Why Is Halibut Fishing Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays?
Halibut fishing in Alaska is carefully managed to protect the long-term health of the fishery and ensure sustainable fishing opportunities for future seasons. In Area 3A, halibut retention for charter anglers is limited to specific days of the week by federal regulation. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are designated non-retention days, meaning halibut may not be kept on those days unless the trip is conducted under the Guided Angler Fish (GAF) program. These midweek closures help: • Control overall halibut harvest levels • Prevent overfishing during peak season • Balance opportunities between commercial and charter fisheries • Maintain a healthy and sustainable halibut population
Fishing License
- You must purchase a fishing license prior to your trip. If on a King Salmon combo you must purchase a King Salmon Stamp. Copy this link for your convenience. https://store.adfg.alaska.gov/
2026 Fuel Surcharge
Due to the continued rise in fuel prices and the increased cost of operating our charter vessels, Puffin Fishing Charters has implemented a fuel surcharge on trips.
We do our best to keep our pricing fair and transparent, but fuel is one of the largest costs in running safe, reliable trips out of Seward. This surcharge helps us continue providing the quality service, experienced crews, and well-equipped vessels our guests expect.
We appreciate your understanding and continued support.
NEW 2026 Halibut Stamp!
New Charter Halibut Stamp Requirement (effective 2026)
Beginning January 2026, all charter-vessel anglers aged 18 or older who intend to catch and retain halibut in IPHC Regulatory Areas 3A must have a valid charter halibut stamp for each calendar day of the trip.
Stamps are purchased electronically by Charter Halibut Permit (CHP) holders via NOAA’s eFISH platform and held in their account until validated for daily use.
Charter vessel guides validate the stamp using Alaska’s electronic logbook (eLogbook) system.
The fee will be $20 per angler per day available at checkout.
