Anchorage Highlights & Indigenous Heritage Tour

Discover Anchorage: City Highlights & Alaska Native Heritage

Duration 3 Hours
Meets at Hotel Captain Cook or Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport

About

Discover the story of Anchorage and the enduring cultural heritage of Alaska’s Indigenous peoples on this immersive 3-hour city and cultural exploration.

Your journey begins with a narrated drive through downtown Anchorage, where you’ll learn how the city grew from its humble beginnings along the banks of Ship Creek into Alaska’s largest urban center. Along the way, your driver-guide shares insights into Anchorage’s history, landmarks, and the people who shaped the city.

The tour continues to the Alaska Native Heritage Center (admission included), where you’ll explore Alaska’s diverse Indigenous cultures at your own pace. Visit the Welcome House, stroll the scenic trails around Lake Tiulana, and experience traditional dwellings representing Native cultures from across the state. Cultural demonstrations—such as storytelling, traditional dancing, singing, and Native Games—may be offered depending on the daily schedule.

In the afternoon, the tour may also include a visit to the Alaska Art Alliance, a nonprofit Indigenous artisan workshop located in downtown Anchorage. Founded in 2018, this unique space supports Alaska Native artists who practice traditional carving arts using materials such as ivory, whale bone, and baleen. This visit is subject to artist availability and workshop operations and may not be available on all departures.

Your experience concludes with convenient drop-off in downtown Anchorage or back at your hotel, making this a seamless and enriching way to explore the city’s cultural roots.
