On cannery row discover the history of Natives and immigrants who process the catch as well as particulars about processing everything from herring to sea cucumbers and so much more.
If the opportunity exists. we will watch a fishing boat offload its catch. Next we head to the bustling docks! Here we will rub shoulders with Kodiak fishermen. We may watch them mending nets, baiting hooks, or stacking corks as we inquire about their season and lifestyle. Your tour will connect you to the people, places and stories of Kodiak in an authentic and meaningful way. Stories of booms and busts, earthquakes and tsunamis and life and death at sea abound.
At the Fisherman’s memorial, you’ll hear personal stories of many of our neighbors and friends lost at sea. Here you can try on a survival suit as you hear of daring Coast Guard rescues and understand what the Coast Guard does for our fishing town. This tour will leave you reevaluating what is involved to bring incredible seafood to our plates but it will also introduce you to a culture that is far away from the day to day office work.
