About
Our full day Small Group Whale Watching, Wildlife, Natural History, and Glacier Tour ventures deep into Kenai Fjords National Park. With over 25 years' experience, we will show you the Fjords' best kept secrets. This is a photographer's paradise where you will see the Harding Icefield, calving glaciers, seals, Steller sea lions, porpoises, and sea otters. We will stop for lunch in front of a calving glacier, giving us ample time to witness and photograph the face of the glacier as mammoth pieces of ice thunder into the sea. A majority of the time we see whales on these wildlife and glacier tours.
What Will We See?
The Kenai Fjords National Park is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Stellar Sealions, Harbor Seals, and Sea Otters are common sights. Sometimes we are lucky enough to see a Mountain Goat or a bear!
Dall's Porpoise are frequent friends and will come play in the wake of the boat.
During spring we are likely to spot grey whales on their annual migration to the Arctic. In the summer we often encounter humpbacks, minke, and fin whales which have traveled thousands of miles to feed in the rich waters of the fjords. Orcas, also known as ""killer whales"", are present in our waters throughout the year.
The Park is a birder's paradise with multiple species of puffins, cormorants, auklets, and more. Our captains know the best spots to help you add to your life list.
About Our Boat
The Steller Explorer is 43' long and certified and inspected annually by the United States Coast Guard. The Steller Explorer has a heated cabin, bathroom, life raft, and walk around decks for excellent viewing.
What to Bring
- Please bring your own water bottle filled with water - you will be able to refill on boat.
- Warm layers - while it is summertime, it is summertime in Alaska and most mornings are chilly. On nice days you’ll be shedding layers, on cooler days you’ll appreciate the layers.
- Rain Gear - our vessel is equipped with a spacious and comfortable interior. But who wants to be inside while a whale is breaching, a glacier is calving, or the fish are biting? Bring at least a good rain jacket with a hood. If you brought rain pants to Alaska this is a good time to break them out. Even if it doesn’t rain, if it’s windy you’ll be able to put those on.
- Warm hat, gloves - this is especially necessary in the late spring/early fall trips, but not a terrible idea in summer. Again, most days are mild, but when the boat is running it gets windy and if you want to be outside (and you likely will be) you’ll be all set if you have some gloves and a hat.
- Sunglasses - the midnight sun is even brighter mid-day so these are a must. If you have polarized glasses, certainly bring them, if our wildlife is cooperative you’ll be able to spot them in the water much better with polarized sunglasses.
- Camera/ phone for taking pictures - we cannot stress this enough. Make sure you have plenty of battery/replacements/charging packs. While we’re working on getting a better system for charging phones on board, you’ll be well covered if you bring what you need.
- A word about seasickness. Our boat is stable, very stable. It’s a heavy built boat designed specifically for the seas in the Pacific NW. However, the seas in Alaska can get rough. If you are prone to seasickness we recommend that you begin taking your seasickness medication 24-36 hours in advance. It gives you a chance to acclimate and a chance to get ahead of the potential for seasickness.
- We provide coffee, cocoa, tea, and water, but please feel free to bring your own drinks, snacks, etc. Alcoholic drinks are perfectly welcome, but use moderation, our captain and deckhand will cut off anyone that over indulges or becomes a problem.
What Not to Bring
- Drones. They are illegal in the Kenai Fjords National Park and they cannot be flown.
- Weapons
- Illegal drugs
- Bad attitude!
